Yes. Most commercial signs require a multi-stage approval process. First, we consult with the Boston Planning & Development Agency (BPDA) to ensure your design fits neighborhood specificities. Once approved, we file a “Long-Form” or “Short-Form” permit with the Inspectional Services Department (ISD). In 2026, we utilize the ISD’s online portal to speed up tracking for our clients.
Digital signs are strictly regulated to prevent light pollution and driver distraction. In most Boston districts, digital displays must remain static and are prohibited from flashing or scrolling. We ensure your display meets the 2026 “Nit” brightness standards and features automatic dimmers to comply with the city’s energy and safety codes.
For the Boston climate, we exclusively recommend Marine-Grade Aluminum or Dibond (Aluminum Composite). These materials are rust-proof and won’t warp in the high humidity of the Seaport or the North End. We also use UV-cured inks and cold-weather rated laminates to prevent cracking during the extreme -10°F to 95°F temperature swings we see annually.
We apply a specialized protective clear coat that resists salt-air corrosion—essential for businesses along Atlantic Ave or the Waterfront. All our freestanding and projecting signs are engineered to meet Massachusetts State Building Code (780 CMR) wind-load requirements, ensuring they stay secure during high-velocity winter gusts.
A “Blade” or projecting sign hangs perpendicular to your building. Because Boston is such a pedestrian-heavy city, blade signs are the best way to catch the eye of foot traffic in dense areas like Faneuil Hall or Back Bay. Per city code, these must maintain a 9-foot clearance above the sidewalk to ensure safety and ADA compliance.
