Yes. Under Article 32, almost all exterior signs require a Zoning and Building Permit. Baltimore utilizes a fully digital ePermits system. If your sign hangs over a public sidewalk (like a blade sign), you also need a Minor Privilege Permit from the Department of Transportation. We handle the entire submittal, including the required Sign Location Plan and structural engineering.
This is a Baltimore-specific requirement for any sign that encroaches on public property (hanging over a sidewalk or street). It involves an annual fee—essentially a “rent” for the air space. In 2026, the city requires proof of liability insurance ($100k/$200k bodily injury) to be on file before this permit is granted.
Because of our proximity to the Chesapeake, we recommend Marine-Grade 5052 Aluminum or 316 Stainless Steel. These materials won’t “rust-bleed” onto your historic brickwork. We also use UV-cured, automotive-grade coatings to prevent the “Harbor Fade” caused by sun reflecting off the water.
For campuses like Johns Hopkins or UMMC, wayfinding must be foolproof. All permanent room signs must have Grade 2 Braille and tactile characters mounted between 48″ and 60″ from the floor.
