Portland uses a specific ratio based on your “Primary Building Wall” length. Generally, you are allowed 1.5 square feet of signage for every 1 linear foot of wall. However, if your property also has a freestanding sign, that ratio drops to 1:1. We perform a professional site measurement to ensure your total “sign area” doesn’t trigger a costly Land Use Review.
If you are in a district like Old Town, Ladd’s Addition, or the Pearl, your sign is subject to Title 33 Design Review. These boards prioritize materials like metal, wood, and glass over plastic. In 2026, we utilize the city’s “free 15-minute planner appointments” to pre-screen your design before formal submittal to avoid rejection.
To prevent rot and “oil-canning,” we recommend Marine-Grade Aluminum or High-Density Urethane (HDU). Unlike MDO (plywood), these won’t swell or peel in our 36+ inches of annual rainfall. We also use IP67-rated waterproof LEDs and specialized “vented” sign cabinets to prevent internal condensation and electrical shorts during the winter months.
“Changing Image” (digital) signs are highly restricted in Portland. They are generally prohibited in most residential and some commercial zones to prevent driver distraction. However, in specific Central City zones, they may be allowed with strict “dwell time” (static message) rules. We provide a complimentary zoning check for your specific address to see if a digital display is a viable option.
